How to set up a Google Search Campaign
This article offers a clear, step-by-step guide to setting up a successful Google Search campaign, perfect for beginners and businesses looking to grow online.
Learning how to create a targeted campaign is essential for driving traffic, generating leads, and increasing conversions.
Step 1: Create a Google Ads Account
Go to Google Ads: Visit ads.google.com and click the Start Now button. If you already have a Google account, you can sign in. If not, create one to proceed.
Account Setup: Once you sign in, Google will guide you through setting up your Google Ads account. You will be prompted to enter details like your billing information, currency preference, and time zone.
Step 2: Create a New Campaign
Start Your Campaign: After completing the account setup, click on New Campaign.
Choose a Campaign Goal: Google will present a list of goals for your campaign. These include:
Sales: Increase sales through your website, phone calls, or in-app.
Leads: Get more inquiries or leads.
Website Traffic: Drive visitors to your website.
Product and Brand Consideration: Encourage people to explore your products/services.
Brand Awareness and Reach: Increase the visibility of your brand.
For this guide, let’s choose Leads as the campaign goal.
Select Campaign Type: Next, select Search as the campaign type. This will create a campaign that shows text ads on Google Search results pages when users enter relevant queries.
Select Campaign Results: You can choose what kind of results you want to focus on, like website visits, phone calls, or app downloads. Choose Website Visits, then enter the URL of your website.
Step 3: Configure Campaign Settings
Campaign Name: Give your campaign a descriptive name that will help you remember its purpose, such as "Lead Gen Campaign September 2024."
Networks: Under Networks, you’ll be asked where you want your ads to appear. By default, both the Google Search Network and Google Display Network will be selected. Since this is a Search campaign, deselect the Google Display Network to focus exclusively on search results.
Target Locations: Choose the geographical locations where you want your ads to appear. For example, if you only serve customers in certain countries, regions, or cities, select those specific locations.
Languages: Choose the languages your customers speak. For example, select English if your campaign targets English-speaking audiences.
Budget: Enter the daily amount you want to spend on the campaign. Google will automatically adjust bids to stay within your budget. You can set this based on your overall marketing budget or test with a small amount like $10-$50 per day to start.
Bidding Strategy: Select a bidding strategy based on your campaign goal. Since you’re aiming to generate leads, you can choose either Maximize Clicks or Maximize Conversions. If you're new, "Maximize Clicks" is an easier option as it focuses on generating more traffic within your budget.
Step 4: Add Extensions
Ad Extensions: Ad extensions help enhance your ads by adding extra information like site links, phone numbers, or callouts. These improve your click-through rates (CTR) and make your ad more appealing. Add relevant extensions such as:
Sitelink Extensions: Link to different pages of your website.
Call Extensions: Show your phone number so users can call directly from the ad.
Callout Extensions: Add additional text highlighting offers or benefits, such as “Free Shipping” or “24/7 Support.”
Step 5: Create Ad Groups and Keywords
Ad Group Setup: An ad group contains one or more ads that share a set of keywords. Set up ad groups that align with your campaign goals and focus on specific themes. For example, if you’re a law firm, one ad group might focus on "Personal Injury Law" while another might target "Family Law Services."
Choose Keywords: Enter keywords that are relevant to your ad group. Use Google’s keyword suggestions or tools like the Keyword Planner to find the best terms. Choose a mix of broad, phrase, and exact match types to maximize your reach and ensure relevance.
Broad Match: Ads show for searches that include variations of your keyword.
Phrase Match: Ads show for searches that include the exact phrase.
Exact Match: Ads show only when the exact term is searched.
Step 6: Create Ads
Write Your Ads: Each ad contains a headline, display URL, and description. You’ll want to write compelling ad copy that grabs attention and encourages users to click.
Headline 1: Include a keyword relevant to the user’s search.
Headline 2: Mention a unique selling point like “Free Consultation” or “Award-Winning Service.”
Description: Offer a clear call-to-action (CTA), such as “Get Your Free Quote Today” or “Contact Us for a Free Consultation.”
Use Responsive Search Ads: Google allows you to create multiple headlines and descriptions, which are dynamically combined to create the best-performing ads. Enter up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions, and Google will automatically test different combinations.
Step 7: Review and Launch
Review Settings: Double-check all your campaign settings to ensure everything is set up correctly. Look at your budget, bidding strategy, keywords, and ad copy.
Launch the Campaign: Once you’re satisfied with the setup, click the Publish button to launch your Google Search campaign. Your ads will begin showing once approved by Google.
Step 8: Monitor and Optimize
Monitor Performance: After your campaign is live, regularly monitor key metrics like impressions, clicks, CTR, and conversions. Check how well your keywords and ads are performing.
Optimize for Success: Make adjustments as needed. You can pause underperforming keywords, adjust bids, or A/B test different ad copy. Over time, optimize your campaign to improve results and ROI.
By following this guide, you’ll learn to set up, optimize, and monitor your campaigns, ensuring that your ads reach the right audience while maximizing your budget. It’s a valuable resource for enhancing your digital marketing strategy and achieving measurable business growth.
You can now create a well-targeted Google Search campaign that reaches potential customers and grows your business.
